For your Ford Escape with factory 4 way, I recommend adding the 7-Way RV Upgrade Kit for Trailer Brake Controller Installation # ETBC7L along with the Curt Echo Mobile Trailer Brake Controller - Wireless # C51180. This combination will give you your 7-way and a brake controller that doesn't require running wires into your vehicle to the dash. This greatly simplifies the process and will allow you to simply put the controller in your glove box for storage when not in use. It utilizes a simple mobile app for setup. It is a really nice unit that makes adding a brake controller as easy as possible and is a great functioning controller.
If you prefer to hardwire a controller to your dash, then I recommend using the kit # ETBC7 to give you the additional wiring and circuit breaker needed then using any of the proportional brake controllers. My favorite is the Prodigy P3 # 90195 or the Redarc Tow Pro Elite # RED44FR
