Adding Battery Isolator for Trailer Mounted Battery

can i isolate a trailer batt. on the trailer side without being connected to the alternator

It sounds like you are wanting to install a battery isolation solenoid like the # PK5231201 to prevent power coming from the 7-Way of your tow vehicle when the vehicle is shut off. If this is the case then you absolutely can do this.
Adding a solenoid like this will make it so that power is only sent back to maintain the trailer's battery charge when the vehicle's ignition is on. This helps to keep the vehicle's battery from draining.
