To set your 2018 Mazda 3 up for towing a light trailer you will need a trailer hitch, wiring harness, ball mount, and hitch ball.
Starting with the hitch I recommend the Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver # 24912 because it offers the easiest install process that doesn't require any modification to the underbody trim panel on your vehicle like with the other available option. It is a Class I hitch that features a 2,000 pound towing weight capacity and will provide you with a 1-1/4 inch receiver opening.
I have attached the written installation instructions that you can take a look at as well. All the necessary hardware will be included.
Then for a trailer wiring harness I recommend the Hopkins Plug-In Simple # HM11141824 that will install by simply plugging into factory ports behind the driver and passenger side tail lights and then running the hot lead up to the battery. I like the Hopkins harness because it allows for a really secure connection for the converter box. Once installed you will have a 4-Way connector to connect with and power a trailer's basic signal lights.
Lastly you will need a ball mount and hitch ball. The Draw-Tite Drawbar # 3593 paired with either a 1-7/8 inch # 19256 or 2 inch # 19258 hitch ball is a great option. The ball mount features either a 2-1/8 inch rise or a 2-3/4 inch drop.
I have also attached a great article on selecting the right ball mount if the rise or drop on this unit is not sufficient for towing your trailer level.
