Can a 16 Inch Trailer Tire be Used on a 5th Wheel Trailer with 15 Inch Tires

Question:

I HAVE A FIFTH WHEEL THAT HAS 15 INCH TIRES AND RIMS THAT ARE RATED AT ABOUT 2500 LBS EACH. I WAS WONDERING IF I COULD GO TO A 16 INCH TIRE. I KNOW THE AXLE RATING REMAINS THE SAME BUT I JUST WANT TO HAVE HEAVIER TIRE. MY BOLT PATTERN IS 6 ON 5 1/2 AND THEIR IS PLENTY OF ROOM TOP AND SIDE IN WHEEL WELL. THANKS

Provided that you have enough space around the tire for a larger size, and you understand that the axle rating remains the same (the larger tire does not allow you to carry more weight) you can change to a larger size. However, you also have to consider that the tire will be taller. This will raise the center of gravity of the trailer and can lead to sway problems.

Another thing you may be able to do is stay with the same tire size but move up to a higher load range rating within that size, if available. Always remember to inflate trailer tires to the maximum psi as indicated on the tire for longest life and best performance. I have included a link to our tire FAQ article for you.
