Recommendation for B&W Gooseneck Compatibility with Demco 16K 5th Wheel Hitch

Question:

I have a 2005 GMC Sierra 3500 8foot bed with the BandW turnover goose ball hitch. I want to use a Demco 16 K hitch. Can I simply add rails to the truck bed? if so, which ones? Or do I need to get the Demco adapter plate. Rails are more economical and it seems that the attaching the hitch at 4 points is better than just around the goose ball. Looking for the most stable hitching system. Any help is appreciated.

For your 2005 GMC Sierra 3500 with the B&W Turnoverball gooseneck you have a couple options for an excellent hitch. The first option is to use the Demco 5th Wheel Base Rails Adapter for B&W Turnoverball Gooseneck Hitches # DM6140 or Curt X5 # 16310. Then you can use any standard fixed mounted hitch, but you still can't use a Sidewinder or Revolution style pin box or an autoslider hitch which you don't need for an 8 foot bed anyway. You will be able to use the Demco Hijacker Premier Series Double Pivot 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch - Single Jaw - Above Bed - 16K # DM6076P-16K you mentioned.

Another option is the B&W Companion Gooseneck-to-5th-Wheel Trailer Hitch Adapter - Dual Jaw - 20,000 lbs # BWRVK3500 which will fit in your gooseneck hitch and the square hole with the rails on either side do hold the hitch well. This will be lighter than the combination of an adapter and hitch.

You cannot install the above bed base rails without removing your gooseneck hitch because the brackets are installed in the same location, so I don't recommend that option.

You may want to consider the Hopkins Endurance 5th Wheel/Gooseneck 90-Degree Wiring Harness with 7-Pole Plug # 41157 to add a 7-way trailer connector to the bed of your truck. This is a great option for easy access and a clean look if you don't already have that in-bed connector.
