Recommended Base Rail Options for 1998 Chevrolet Stepside Truck

For your 1998 Chevy stepside truck I recommend the Reese Universal Base Rails and Installation Kit for 5th Wheel Trailer Hitches - 10 Bolt # RP30035 which will require some measuring as there aren't custom brackets available from any of our manufacturers. The attached instructions state that your rear rail edge will be 30-15/16 inches from the rear edge of your truck bed for a long bed or 25-3/16 inches for a short bed. Once the rear rail is in place you will use your hitch to determine the front rail location.
One of the other popular options for your truck is the underbed mount that comes with the Custom Underbed Installation Kit for B&W Companion 5th Wheel Trailer Hitches # BWGNRK1050-5W. This does give you a custom mount and then you will use the Curt X5 5th Wheel Base Rails Adapter for B&W Turnoverball Gooseneck # 16310 to give you the rails for your hitch. This gives you both the gooseneck hitch and the clean bed when desired.
You may also want to consider adding a second 7-way to the bed using # 20023. This will give you an easy connection point and a clean look.
