Why Do Trucks Have Higher Towing Capacity for Fifth Wheel Pin Weight than Truck Bed Payload

Question:

Im looking at buying this vehicle with a 3.55 axle, short bed with the plan to set up for 5th wheel in the near future. How heavy can I go with a fifth wheel trailer weight? Whats the difference in towing capacity with fifth wheel vs. towing off the Class IV receiver? Thanks.

So the difference between payload capacity and pin weight capacity is that the fifth wheel hitch setups are bolted directly to the truck's frame which is where their capacity is related to and payload is the truck bed which is made from a much less strong material.

Without knowing what year/make/model your truck is it's hard to say what the capacity is but if you check with Ram or the owners manual the capacity will be listed.
