Adding a 7-Way Trailer Connector to Vehicle with 4-Way Connector
Question:
I have a truck with a 4 pin connector. I need to add a brake controller. Im betting Ill need to run a new harness from controller to a new 7 pin connector. I would like to charge a battery on my trailer while hooked up to my truck. Is a regular 7 pin harness able to do that, or do I need an upgraded one, ie larger gauge? How much power can I run through it? What do recommend? Thanks

The best way to put a 7-way trailer connector on your truck is to use our # ETBC7 kit and convert the existing 4-way. The kit includes both 7- and 4-way connectors so you won't lose your 4-way either.
Along with the connector the # ETBC7 kit also has the wiring and circuit breakers to install an electric brake controller and power the 7-way's 12 volt pin for the battery on your trailer. Although you won't be able to charge the trailer battery through the connector you'll only be able to maintain it.
To charge a trailer battery you'll need something like the Redarc charger, part # 331-BCDC1225D.
