You can bypass the factory trailer wiring harness on your 2000 Mercury Mountaineer by installing Curt wiring harness # C55345. It plugs in line with the vehicle tail light wiring and connects to the vehicle battery to power the trailer lights. This will provide a 4-Way flat connector at the rear of the vehicle.
If you need a 7-Way connector, then you would just add # ETBC7. I have included some links that explain the ETBC7 installation for you.
I do not have a wiring diagram for the factory wiring on your Mountaineer so if you need to determine the wiring functions you can use a circuit tester such as # PTW2993 and test the wires while someone operates the various functions in the vehicle.
