What Size Weight Distribution System is Needed for a Coachmen Apex Ultra Lite Travel Trailer
Question:
I have a Coachmen Apex Ultra Lite travel trailer. When I check the tongue weight what comes with the trailer full propane and battery and accessories from factory. It weighs in at 550 pounds. I have a 2017 Chevy Colorado Z71 4 X 4 long bed crew cab with a 100XL canopy installed on the truck. What size distribution hitch should I have? Also I have installed are the Firestone cone shaped air bags and are running 50 to 70 psi in them when towing.

In order to make sure you have the correct size weight distribution system you need to weigh the loaded ready to tow tongue weight of your trailer and add that to any cargo stored behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. The trailer tongue weight can be found with either a tongue weight scale like part # e99044 or a commercial truck scale. The manufacturer does indeed list the tongue weight for trailers but this is dry tongue weight and should not be used in the above calculations for a weight distribution system as they generally are not the same as when the trailer is loaded and ready to tow.
If the issue you are experiencing with your current system is too much sag then you may just need to adjust the head. However, if the issue you are having is with excessive sway then that has more to do with the type of system you have rather than whether or not it is rated correctly. The best weight distribution systems we offer for sway control is the Strait-Line Weight Distribution System. It has four point sway control unlike almost all other options that have two point sway control. It is not exactly cost effective but worth the added expense to most who have issues with excessive sway.
If your total tongue weight is between 400 lbs - 800 lbs then I recommend using the Strait-Line Weight Distribution part # RP66073. There won't be any issue with your Firestone Sport-Rite Air Helper Springs part # F2587 but you will want to set them up first before the weight distribution system.
