Recommended Hitch-Mount Bike Rack for Mountain Bike and Tandem Bike

Question:

I need to be able to transport 2 full-suspension mountain bikes or 1 tandem bike with a single, hitch-mount rack. Would this rack work for a tandem bike?

The Swagman Trailhead 2 Bike Rack # S63360 referenced in your question should work well for your full-suspension mountain bikes as long as they are under 35 pounds each. You may just need to add an adapter bar like the Kuat # UB01 if the suspension components on the bikes are directly beneath the top tube. This will provide a horizontal attachment point for the rack so that it can properly secure the bikes.

The issue though with this rack will be with your tandem bike. It's unlikely that a hanging style rack like this one will be able to handle a tandem bike both because of its weight and also its design/size.

Your best option will be with a platform bike rack that allows for a longer wheelbase like the Swagman XC-Extended Bike Rack for 2 Recumbent Bikes - 1-1/4" and 2" Hitches - Frame Mount # S64650-EXT. This rack can secure two bikes of up to 35 pounds each and has a maximum wheelbase of 69 inches. If this will work with your tandem's wheelbase then this will be your best option for both this bike and your suspension mountain bikes.

If the 69" is not long enough, you could go with a small trailer like the Detail K2 # K2MMT4X6 which is 72" long or the Detail K2 # K2MMT5X7 which is 88" long. With one of these trailers you would have plenty of room for your tandem, your other bike, and even room for other items. You would need some tie-downs like the Erickson Ratchet Tie-Down Straps w/ Web Clamps and S-Hooks - 1" x 10' - 500 lbs - Qty 4 # EM31352 to secure your bikes. You could even add a set of ramps to make loading and unloading much easier.
