Right Turn Signal on Trailer Works But Right Brake Does Not
Question:
I have a 2003 Chevy Silverado that came with a seven pin trailer connector. Recently I have lost the right brake light but still have the right turn signal. I have verified it is a problem in the truck not the trailer by testing the connector on the truck. Any suggestions on how to correct or what the problem might be?

When looking at your 7-way connector from the rear of the vehicle, the pin at the 3 o'clock position is what carries the right turn and brake signal. Start by using a circuit tester, part # PTW2993, to test this pin while someone operates the right turn signal on the truck while it is in park and the parking brake engaged. Also, check to make sure there is not corrosion in the connector and inspect to make sure there are not any wires in the system that are frayed or shorting out.
If you have or do verify that there is signal at the rear of the 7-way on the truck, then the problem is more than likely on the trailer. I would inspect the right taillight assembly to make sure there is good clean ground connection.
I have linked an FAQ on wiring and a picture showing the functions on a 7-way vehicle connector.
