Trailer Brakes are Not Working but Truck is Sending Brake Signal to 7-Way

Question:

Hello I bought a used legend 20,000 gooseneck trailer and the brakes aren’t working . I got my multimeter out and checked the plug , to the truck thinking that maybe after it being at the shop for light issues something got hooked up wrong but all seems to be working . Along with brake controller ? What do you recommend moving forward ? Ps trailer is 2012 thank you for any help

Expert Reply:

If your brake controller is working correctly and it is sending signal to the 7-Way connector on the truck then that means you have isolated the issue to your gooseneck trailer.

Check the 7-Way connector on your trailer and clean accordingly. Once that is done, or if it wasn't dirty, check the wire that runs from your brakes to your 7-Way. Since all of your brakes aren't working it is likely damaged in some way. You can replace any damaged sections with 10 Gauge Wire # 10-1-1 and Butt Connectors # DW05745-5.
