Things to be Aware of When Charging a Battery from an Alternator

Question:

Im running a 750 watts inverter off of the main battery so I can have a little fridge / freezer in the van along with other ac items occasionally. The battery drains rather quickly and I was looking to add another 12 volt battery in parallel using the alternator to keep both batteries charged. What should I be aware of?

The biggest thing to be aware of is that your alternator will more or less provide just a maintenance charge for your batteries. If you don't have anything drawing power it may (very slowly) charge your batteries but the best way to keep your batteries charged is by using a charger like part # CTEK56353 when you have access to AC power.

The next best thing is for you to use the Redarc In-Vehicle BCDC Battery Charger # 331-BCDC1240D along with a solar panel like part # 34273836. Again, this will slowly charge your batteries, but it is better than just having your alternator send power.
