I am assuming you have electric brakes? If so there could be a number of reasons why the rear brake(s) on your trailer are getting hot. These reasons include but are not limited to lack of lubrication, spindle nut too tight, improper adjustment, failing brake magnets etc. However, since the issue only occurs every so often then it sounds like you have a wiring/magnet issue.
I recommend checking all the wiring and making sure there is not any power on the brake output wire once the brakes in the vehicle are released. If there is then you have a short somewhere and you will need to inspect the wiring. We also have a brake magnet troubleshooting help article which I have attached for you. Let me know once the above has been completed and we can go from there.
