Recommended Transmission Cooler for a 2017 Honda Pilot
Question:
Hi Experts, I have a 2017 Honda Pilot Touring AWG and have just installed the hitch and the tolling wires. I will be tolling a 22 ft boat that could reach close to 5000 lb for small trips usually less than 100 miles. I was wondering to know if I need to install a transmission cooler on it? Can you advise me?

A transmission cooler is never really going to be required for any vehicle but it is always best to use one for towing if you have an automatic transmission, especially if you are near the end of your vehicle's towing capacity (see owner's manual). The transmission cooler will help to keep the fluid cool while towing which as it warms could create damage to the unit and cost thousands in repairs. I highly recommend using one as they are both cost effective and easy to install. Chances are you already have a factory cooler but they are not really designed for towing so a larger add-on option is a great idea. It will not replace the factory cooler but rather supplement it.
For your 2017 Honda Pilot, I recommend the Derale Series 8000 Plate-Fin Transmission Cooler Kit part # D13503. This cooler will do an excellent job of making sure the transmission fluid temperatures stay within a safe level while towing. We have actually had the chance to install this very same cooler on a 2017 Honda Pilot so you should be able to follow along and have the cooler installed in around an hour give or take. The kit comes with everything you need.
