Replacing a CURT Trailer Brake Controller with a Tekonsha P3 on a 1998 Toyota 4Runner
Question:
Ive got an existing brake controller, Curt 50120. Can I just plug this controller into the existing harness or will I need additional wiring?

I believe that you have an older version of the CURT Discovery brake controller. The CURT controller and the Tekonsha P3, # 90195, use different connecting plugs. However, you could hardwire the P3 to the CURT wiring harness by cutting off the plug on the CURT harness.
It looks like the CURT harness uses the same color/functions configuration as the P3. White is ground, black is 12-volt power, blue is output to the trailer, and red is input from the brake light circuit. Use a circuit tester like # PTW2993 to verify the CURT harness functions.
If the brake controller was hardwired (no plug or port for a simple plug and play is present on the vehicle) you can just remove the old brake controller and install the new one without additional wiring using the wires already present. Follow the functions listed above.
I have included a link to the installation details for the P3 for you.
