Is Weight Distribution Needed for 2003 Ford Expedition Towing a 2008 Aerolite Cub 5,000-Lb Trailer
Question:
I have a 2003 Ford Expedition XLT 5.4 4x4 independent rear suspension and recently purchased a 2008 Aerolite Cub 235 expandable trailer. The trailer is 24.4’ with dry hitch weight of 362 lb, GVWR of about 5000 lb, 2 axle, 14” wheels and electric brakes, 2” ball coupler. I took it to the mountains last weekend and didn’t feel any issues. But I plan longer trips around Colorado and neighboring states and was wondering if you recommend installing a WD/sway control system? If yes, what kind do you think is the most practical for me and why? BTW. I already ordered Prodigy P2 brake control. Thanks

A weight distribution system is a good idea any time you are towing a trailer that is at least 50 percent of the tow vehicle weight, if you are experiencing rear end sag on the tow vehicle, or if you experience trailer sway. I think that with your 24.4 foot trailer with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 5,000 lbs being towed with your 2003 Ford Expedition, you would benefit from a weight distribution system.
To choose a weight distribution system you will need a system that has a tongue weight capacity range that encompasses the trailer tongue weight loaded and ready to tow, plus the weight of any gear in the truck bed behind the rear axle. It is very important to get your exact trailer tongue weight to be able to choose the correct weight distribution setup for your application. If you can get me that information I can help you with an exact system for your vehicle and trailer.
For an example, if we use the GVWR of the trailer, which is about 5,000 lbs and 10 to 15 percent of this as tongue weight, you are looking at 500 lbs to 750 lbs.
For a practical choice I would recommend the Reese Strait-Line Weight Distribution System with Sway Control, part # RP66087. This weight distribution system has a tongue weight range of 400 lbs to 800 lbs and includes the dual-cam sway control. The dual-cam sway control is the newest version of sway control that will stop trailer sway before it begins.
This system will include all the parts you will need, except for a hitch ball. The recommended hitch ball is the CURT 2 Inch Hitch Ball, part # A-90.
Good choice with the Prodigy P2 brake controller. It is our most popular brake controller.
