How To Test if Fifth Wheel Hitch Jaw is Connected to King Pin

Question:

Hi, the arm to our new fifth wheel hitch is not opening the jaws to release our trailer. There is no resistance. It’s on level ground btw. Can we even move it like that? Is the trailer secure and how do we get it off? Help!!

Here's how you test to see if the trailer is connected securely. Lower your landing gear jacks so that they are about 1/2 inch off the ground. Now slide the manual override lever of your trailer so that the brakes are locked up. Now inch the truck forward. If the trailer is connected you'll drag the wheels skidding. If you are not connected the king pin will slide out of the hitch. If this happens try connecting again to see if you can get the jaws to engage fully as it almost sounds like the jaws aren't fully closed.
