Troubleshooting Trailer Running Light Circuit that Stopped Working When White Wire Connected

It ended up being a wiring short from a metal fastner on the trailer and a bad fuse in the engine compartment electrical box. Good success to etrailer!

If everything worked prior to you connecting the white wire you mentioned to the frame of the trailer I would try removing the wire to see if everything works again. It's possible the wire is not a ground although white colored wires are typically ground wires on trailer wiring. I'd also recommend using a circuit tester to probe that wire when the running lights are on to see if it possibly carries the running light circuit and by connecting it to the frame you shorted the circuit out.
You may have popped the fuse for this circuit under the hood of the vehicle too so you'd want to check that as well. I attached a couple help articles on trailer wiring for you to check out as well.
