Troubleshooting A Blinker and Wiring Issue

Question:

We connect the wires correct but when I turn the blinkers on both blinkers come on. When I try to drive it jerks like the camper brakes are on. What did I do wrong when I wired it?

I am happy to help you resolve your blinking issue and to get your wiring working properly. You will want to check the installation of the wiring harness looking for corrosion, cut or exposed wire or anything else that would cause the short and fix as necessary. In order to determine the problem, you'll need to use a circuit tester such as # PTW2993 to test the 7-way on your vehicle after disconnecting it from your trailer.

In order to test all the functions of the vehicle's connector, you will need a helper. While one of you is in the vehicle with the ignition on, you will want to run through all the light functions of the harness to ensure you are receiving the proper readings from the circuit tester. Once identified using the attached diagram, activate the left turn signal from the vehicle while using the circuit tester to test that specific wire to ensure it is receiving a charge. If those connections are working properly, next test the location of each function on the trailer and make sure they match the functions of your truck.

To test the functions on your trailer use a 12v battery with a jumper wire and touch one end of the jumper wire to the positive post of the battery and then touch the other end of the wire to all of the different wires to see what circuits illuminate. You want to make sure your trailer connector matches the trailer connector functions on the towing vehicle.

Another likely culprit would be a poor ground, which can cause a host of potential problems, including your turn signal problem. Ensure your grounds are secure and connected to a bare metal surface which is free of paint, dirt, or corrosion of any kind.
