Recommend Weight Distribution System For Old 1977 Trailer Towed by 1996 Chevrolet Suburban

Question:

saw a note concerning surge trailer brakes, I have a 1996,Suburban,4 w/d,2500. Recently purchased older trailer 1977. I have brake controller, now need weight dist hitch and sway control. Trailer is approx.6000 lbs. I am confused as to just how heavy-duty my truck requires to pull this safely and what are surge brakes...thanks

When selecting a weight distribution system, you will want to use one that has a tongue capacity range that will encompass 10 to 15 percent of the Gross Trailer Weight (GTW) when the trailer is fully loaded and ready to be towed.

We do have weight distribution systems that feature sway control. I would recommend going with a weight distribution system that features dual-cam sway control, as it acts to stop trailer sway before it even starts.

You will need to check your trailer for the GTW fully loaded and ready to travel . If the GTW of your trailer is 6,000 lbs, 10 to 15 percent of that, or the tongue weight would be between 600 and 900 lbs. I would recommend the Reese Strait-Line Weight Distribution w Sway Control, part # RP66074. This system is suitable for trailers that have a tongue weight between 600 and 1200 lbs.

Surge brakes are brakes that are incorporated into the trailer coupler and used with hydraulic brake setups. If you have an electric brake controller, you might have electric trailer brakes or an electric over hydraulic system installed on your trailer.

I have linked an FAQ Article on weight distribution systems. Also linked is a video review and instructions for the Reese Strait-Line Weight Distribution w Sway Control, part # RP66074.
