Benefits of Sidewinder Versus Sliding Hitch for 2012 Dodge Ram Mega Cab
Question:
I have a 2012 Dodge, Mega Cab, SWB Dually, I am told I need at least a slider, will the sidewinder work? what advantage does sidewinder have over a slider. I have pulled before, but not with a slider

Expert Reply:
A typical sliding fifth wheel hitch can provide 10 to 12 inches of travel, gaining additional clearance between the front of the fifth wheel and the rear of the truck cab. Depending on the width of the fifth wheel, 90 degree turns might be possible without the fifth wheel striking the truck cab. A slider is not recommended for beds shorter than 6-1/2 feet.
A Sidewinder would be used with a non-sliding hitch, and would provide an additional 22 inches of clearance, virtually guaranteeing clearance for 90 degree turns. The Sidewinder is pin-box specific, so you will need to examine your current pin box for the manufacturer and model number.
