Recommend Trailer Coupler Lock That Will Help Deter Theft

Question:

Which is more secure the maximum security or gorilla gard trailer lock. Can't tell diameter of locking bar.. Can it be cut with heavy duty bolt cutters. I have cut hardened steel with large bolt cutters in the past.

I walked out to our warehouse and pulled the Tow Ready Trailer Coupler Lock. The locking bar measures approximately a 1/2 inch in diameter. The representative at Tow Ready informed me that the lock is made of 1407 steel.

I then contacted our representative at Fastway about the Universal Trailer Coupler Lock, part # FA86-0015-316. He informed me that this locking bar has a diameter of 5/8 inch hardened steel. He informed me that this is the biggest and strongest lock on the market and is not able to be cut with bolt cutters.

I would recommend going with the Fastway # FA86-0015-316, as we have had great reviews from customers on this lock.

However, with opportunity and time a determined thief will normally get the item they are after. Using the coupler lock will help deter theft and make your trailer harder to steal.

Regarding your recommendation of Diversi-Tech DT25013 being more secure, it should be mentioned that DT uses a tubular key lock. These are incredibly easy to open using the plastic barrel of a Bic ballpoint pen. This came to light a few years ago when bike thieves discovered the trick with Kryptonite locks. You can google about it..Its good info that the DT lock has a thicker, hardened shank. But, the tubular lock makes it much more prone to defeat than the Tow Ready which is under discussion. Im not thrilled by any of the trailer locks. I think the Blaylock with the three pin holes may be the best *if* you use one of those hidden shank, round solid-core locks used to lock hasps like to secure rear van doors or vending machines. The opening in the back isnt large enough for the Blaylock pin. You have to grind flats onto the pin end so it will fit into the hasp lock. Im leaning toward this, but the Blaylock pin isnt hardened. If Blaylock made a hardened pin for use with this type of lock it would be, IMO, the best trailer lock. Maybe eTrailer has some in with the company and could make a recommendation? Just a smaller hole in the pin, flats on the end where the hole is, and hardened. A potential upgrade item..

As with any lock, they are theft-deterrents. Make a better lock, someone else will make a better thief. With enough time and the right tools, any lock can be defeated. The Baylocks have been very well received since we started carrying them. They are simple to use and are pretty hearty. The only other thing I might suggest, is a wheel lock. Typically larger and more robust than a coupler lock, they will take more time to defeat even with good tools. Check out the Fulton FTK1000100,
