We have two brake controllers that work well with air brake systems. I recommend the Hayes Air Actuated Trailer Brake Controller - 1 to 4 Axles - Proportional # HA100400C. This system offers both manual override and proportional braking giving your trailer brakes the same intensity as your truck. I've attached a video review to assist.
If you feel comfortable working with air systems, then you can absolutely do it yourself. If you are not comfortable with that, I recommend having a profession install it. You will want extra hose like # RM450700 and a circuit breaker like # 9506P along with # 10-2-1 wire. I've attached an article to assist with the installation and also suggest using a circuit tester like # PTW2993. If you don't have a 7-way compatible with your toy hauler, then I recommend using the # ETBC7 kit.
