For your 2001 Chevy 2500 HD, your towing capacity for a 5th wheel is based on the Gross Combined Weight Rating. Your truck will have a sticker in the driver's door frame that states the GVWR of your truck.
For your 5th Wheel, I recommend beginning with the custom rail kit # C16418-204. This kit will give you custom brackets to allow you to mount the brackets to your frame with only the need to drill one hole in the frame on each side. The other holes are already in the frame that you will utilize.
Then I recommend the Curt A16 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch # C16120. This hitch has a interlocking jaw design and is easy to install weighing just 112 lbs. This hitch head has a 3-point indicator system that helps ensure you have connected or disconnected fully with a quick glance. It also has two zerk grease fittings for easy maintenance. I've attached a video to assist.
Finally, I also recommend # C56000 for a 5th wheel wiring harness in the bed of your truck to give you a second working 7-way connection and an easy connection point for your trailer wiring.
I've attached an article to help further with the installation of your hitch.
