Recommended Roof Rack and Kayak Carrier for 2 Kayaks on 2014 Toyota 4Runner
Question:
Hello, I have a 2014 4Runner SR5 with factory raised rails. I just purchased two kayaks both are 10foot and weight around 40lbs each. I have been looking at which crossbars and kayak racks to purchase with safety being a big concern and I want to have crossbars that can handle the weight and hold the kayaks safely. What I have initially looked at was different options of 50inch crossbars and then two sets of the J style kayak racks. Could you give me your recommendation for which crossbars and which kayak racks I should purchase for my vehicle?

Starting with the roof rack, I recommend the Thule WingBar Evo Roof Rack for your 2014 Toyota 4Runner as long as it is not the Trail Model. This system consists of # TH711420 for the two 53 inch long WingBar Load Bars and # TH710401 for the Evo Feet that will attach to the factory side rails on the roof. This will give you a complete and durable system that has a 220 pound weight capacity.
Then, for a J-Style carrier, I really like the Rhino-Rack J-Style Kayak Carrier # S512. This is a great, j-style folding cradle that can carry 1 kayak on its side but can also be expanded to carry both of your kayaks by adding the Extension Arm # RRS512X. This carrier features rubber padding on the cradle arms to cushion the kayak and a steel tube construction with black powder coat finish to resist corrosion. 2 specially designed tie-down straps are included to secure the kayak to the crossbars, along with 2 additional straps that will anchor the kayak's bow and stern to the vehicle. This provides an extremely secure and safe setup for travel.
I have included a video demonstration on this carrier so you can get a closer look at its features and how it installs.
