When looking for a properly rated weight distribution system, the most important factor to consider is the total tongue weight of your towing setup. This number includes both the loaded tongue weight of the trailer (as if it is loaded and ready for a trip), along with any added cargo weight coming from behind the rear axle of your Cadillac SRX. Ideally, this number will fall somewhere near the middle of the operating range for the system you choose.

The most accurate method for determining your trailer's loaded tongue weight is with a scale like the # e99044. In the meantime, though, we can take a pretty good estimate of what this will be based on the weights you provided in your question. We can first add the trailer's 3,040 pound empty weight to the approximate 500 pounds of extra weight you will be loading, which will give us a total loaded weight of around 3,540. Since a trailer's tongue weight should be 10 to 15 percent of its total weight, we can then estimate a loaded tongue weight of 350 to 530 pounds.

If this ends up being a pretty accurate estimate, I recommend looking at the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System # EQ37060ET. This system features a tongue weight capacity of 200 to 600 pounds and it will do a great job of evenly distributing weight over the axles of your Cadillac and trailer. The integrated 4-Point Sway Control will limit side to side movement and the no-drill, clamp-on brackets can be adjusted along the trailer frame. Both the adjustable shank and hitch ball are included with this system, so nothing else will need to be obtained separately.

I have attached a short video demonstration on this system that you can check out, along with a great FAQ on weight distribution systems that you might find helpful.
