Best Weight Distribution System for a 4,000 Lb Travel Trailer
Question:
We will be towing with an Acura MDX with the 5000lb tow package installed. The dealer Im buying our new Travel Trailer single axle ~4000lbs from has recommended the Reese Pro Series 1000lbs TW max. I see TW 550 and 750 hitches, Is it OK to go a head and use the 1000LB hitch, will it damage my trailer?

In order to choose the correct weight distribution system, you will need to find the total tongue weight (TTW) of your towing setup by adding the tongue weight (TW) of both your loaded ready to tow trailer and any cargo stored behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle.
An easy way to find this would involve using a tongue weight scale like the etrailer Trailer Tongue Weight Scale part # e99044. When choosing a weight distribution system, you will want your TTW to fall in the middle of the weight distribution's weight capacity. For example, the ideal weight distribution system for a total tongue weight of 600 lbs. is one that is rated for 400-800 lbs. of tongue weight.
Using a hitch that is not properly rated for the tongue weight of the trailer is not recommend. It will not damaged the trailer but it will also not be nearly as effective as a system rated for the tongue weight of the trailer. For a 4,000 lb trailer I estimate the tongue weight to be between 400 lbs - 600 lbs. If this is the case then I recommend using the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System part # EQ37060ET. The Equal-i-zer system is one of the best on the market with 4-point sway control to both prevent and reduce trailer sway.
I have attached a review video of the above system for you as well.
