Recommendation of Breakaway Set-Up For Dexter Electric Over Hydraulic Brake Actuator # K71-651
Question:
I am planning to replace the electric brakes on my fifth wheel trailer with kodiac disc brakes and using a Dexter electric over hydrauilc actuator. Can I use my existing breakaway set up with four 6 volt golf cart batteries or do I need to use a seperate breakaway unit? Thanking you in advance.

The Dexter Electric Over Hydraulic Brake Actuator, part # K71-651, for the disc brakes will require a minimum 9 amp/hour breakaway kit like the Dexter Breakaway Kit, part # 34-285. This breakaway kit is designed to work with the Dexter electric over hydraulic brake actuator. If the breakaway set-up you have now is a 12 volt system with a minimum of 9 amp/hour battery, you should be fine to use the setup you have.
You will also want to make sure the brake controller you will be using is compatible with electric over hydraulic brakes. The brake controller I would recommend would be the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Brake Controller, part # 90885.
This is a proportional brake controller and one of the most popular brake controllers that we sell.
I am including a link to the installation instructions on the Tekonsha brake controller.
