Troubleshooting Brakes Only Working on One Axle of Tandem Axle Trailer

Question:

I have AlKo 7000lb axles with 12in brakes. With power applied, one axles brakes work and the other does not. Both leads have power on nonworking axle. Does this indicate bad magnet? Or wiring problem? Thanks

If you tested the brake output wires as close as possible to the magnets on the axle in question, using a circuit tester like # PTW2993, and they are getting voltage, then it's likely not a wiring issue. I also recommend testing the magnets themselves to make sure they are in good condition. I have attached a great article that explains exactly how to do this.

The brake assemblies on this axle might simply be out of adjustment. To adjust the trailer brakes, use a brake adjustment tool to turn the starwheel on the adjuster until the wheel is very difficult to turn by hand. From there, back off the starwheel in the other direction, about 10 clicks, until the brakes just drag slightly. I have attached a short video that you can use for reference. Starting at about the 4:20 mark, you can see the brake assemblies being adjusted.

If this does not resolve the issue, please let me know and I will be happy to look into this further.
