Recommended Brake Controller and 7-Way Wiring for 2016 Ford Explorer Limited
Question:
I have a 2016 For Explorer Limited, 3.5 AWD with Trans . 3.65 Final drive Axle ratio, Towing w/Trailer sway control I had the dealer install the tow package. what I found they installed is a trailer hitch and 4 pin wiring harness. If my research is correct that only gets my a 2000 pound towing capacity and I require 5000 pound towing capacity. My questions to you are: Does my SUV have the wiring harnesses necessary to install a 4/7 pin connector TConnector ? Does my SUV have the correct connector in dash, under the steering wheel behind the knee kick panel, to install an after market trailer brake controller ? Do I have to have the engine cooler added as well ? What controller would you recommend ? Thank you for your help

You are correct that the 2016 Ford Explorer with 3.65 final drive only has a 2000 lb towing capacity. Adding the other wiring connector and brake controller and even a transmission cooler won't increase that capacity.
If you want to add a brake controller, I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195 which comes with preset options, a nice LCD screen that eliminates the code deciphering, and is our best seller due to its features and reliability.
For your wiring, there will not be a connection under your dash, but you can use the Universal Brake Controller installation kit # ETBC7 to give you the 7-way connector, the wiring, connections, and circuit breakers needed.
Adding a transmission cooler when towing is always a good idea. For your Explorer, I recommend the Derale Series 8000 Plate-Fin Transmission Cooler Kit w/Barb Inlets - Class III - Efficient # D13503. This cooler has turbulator plates for more efficient cooling and is constructed of furnace-brazed aluminum. It comes with the installation kit.
