Recommended 5th Wheel Hitch for Towing a GVWR 16,250 lb Trailer with a 2006 Ram 3500 Short Bed

Question:

I just bought a 2006 Dodge Ram 3500 SRW 6.3 bed. I am also looking to buy a camper that has a dry weight of 13,585 and GVWR of 16,250. What type and size of hitch will work best for my truck?

Typically we recommend going with a 5th wheel hitch that is rated for about 2,000 lbs more than what the GVWR of your trailer is. That way if you were to totally max out the weight of your trailer your hitch isn't maxed out as well.

Since your 2006 Ram 3500 is a short bed you will want to look into getting a sliding 5th wheel hitch to avoid trailer-to-cab contact when taking sharp turns.

The best option for you to go with would be the Demco Hijacker Autosliding 5th Wheel Hitch. This hitch eliminates the need to get out of your truck to unlock and lock your sliding hitch for those tight turns. It also comes with a single jaw design and a double-pivot hitch head for a smooth ride and easy hookup. You can use standard base rails # DM8552016-71 with part # DM8550034 for an 18K hitch but if you would like underbed rails (for a clear bed when you are not towing) you will want to go with the rails # DM8551005 and part # DM8550022 rated for 18K as well.

A more cost-effective option would be the Reese base rails # RP56011-53 and Reese 20K # RP30083 which offers a single jaw design and 4-way pivoting head, again, for a smooth ride and easy hookup. Even though this isn't as convenient as the autosliding option, this is one of the nicest sliding hitches that we have to offer.

Either one of these 5th wheel hitches will do a great job and hold up well for many years to come as well as you follow any instructions about maintenance.

If you don't already have a 7-Way in the bed of your Ram then I also recommend installing the Hopkins # HM42137 which will help to make hooking the 7-Way from your camper to your truck much easier.
