Recommended Trailer Brake Controller and Wiring for 2013 Toyota Highlander
Question:
Hi, I have a Toyota Highlander with an OEM hitch that has an integral four-pin wiring connector built into it. I need to be able to easily switch from the four-pin to a 7-pin since I have two trailers. I currently only have the four-pin so Ill need to install the 7-pin and brake controller. Please advise what controller I ought to purchase and any other wiring kits I should get. I plan on keeping the 4-pin controller live and plug the 7-pin into it when I switch trailers and need to use the brake controller. I have a 2013 Toyota Highlander 4WD with 6 cylinder engine, btw.

Starting with the wiring on your 2013 Toyota Highlander, I recommend using the Universal Installation Kit # ETBC7 to install a fully functional 7-Way connector from the existing 4-Way on the vehicle. This kit includes all the wiring needed to do this. The great thing about the connector that is included with the kit is that it has both 7-Way and 4-Way connectors, meaning you will still retain use of your 4-Way so you can tow multiple trailers without hassle.
I have attached an installation video on your 2013 Toyota Highlander along with a great article that details the installation steps for this kit.
Then for the trailer brake controller itself, I highly recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 # 90885. This is a fantastic, proportional controller that will activate the trailer's brakes at the same time and with the same intensity that you apply to them in your Highlander. It features an easy to read, digital display along with continuous diagnostics that will alert you to any potential issues. This unit is well known for its reliability and ease of installation.
I have attached an installation video on the 2012 Highlander you can use for reference. I have also included the written instructions manual for the controller that you can take a look at.
