Operating A Proportional Brake Controller On Hills Towing 18 Ft Trailer w/ 2001 Dodge Ram 2500
Question:
I need a controller for my 2001 Dodge Ram 2500 Cummins. It has a factory installed hitch with a 7 prong connector. I will be towing an 18ft trailer with 4 motorcycles to NH next week, but I dont tow very often. I am not sure what type of controller I should purchase. How does a proportional work when the truck is not level such as going down or up a hill? It says in the instructions that it must be level.

For a brake controller for your 2001 Dodge Ram 2500, I would recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Brake Controller part # 90885 to be used with the Dodge Adapter, # 3020-P. The P2 brake controller is one of our most popular controllers, for its ease of use and user friendliness. If the 7-way on your vehicle is factory installed 7-way, all you will need to do is plug in the Dodge specific wiring adapter to the brake controller port under the dash. The port is located to the right of the steering column, the other end will plug into the back of the brake controller.
A proportional brake controller sends power to the brakes in proportion to the rate the tow vehicle is slowing down. This allows the trailer to slow down at the same rate as the tow vehicle.
The P2 can be mounted vertically in any position as it has a 360 degree vertical mounting range. The P2 should just be mounted parallel to the direction the vehicle is traveling. This is possible because of the self-leveling feature of the P2 that levels automatically as you drive. You do not have to worry about towing up or down steep grades. See the installation video that I linked that shows how the P2 can be mounted.
The item you selected, Tekonsha Voyager, part # 39510, does not have a wide range of mounting or the self leveling feature of the P2.
I have linked instructions for the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Brake Controller part # 90885 and the Dodge Adapter, # 3020-P. I have linked an FAQ on brake controllers that you may find as good reference.
