A pintle hook is not designed to prevent standard trailer coupler from coming off of the hitch ball. There is also a good possibility that the top portion of the pintle hook would not be able to close far enough to insert the pin through the pintle hook. The top of the coupler will sit further above the hitch ball than what the pintle hook was designed for.

If your trailer coupler pops off of your hitch ball, then there is likely a problem with the coupler. I recommend having the trailer coupler inspected. The wedge or spring for the coupler latch could be damaged, which could cause the trailer to come off of the ball. If this is the case. If the coupler is the issue, your best option is to replace the coupler on the trailer. Another possibility is that the coupler on the trailer was designed to work with a larger hitch ball than you are using. There should be a recommended ball size stamped somewhere on the coupler. Make sure you are using the recommended hitch ball size for your coupler.
