Recommended Side-Mount Trailer Jack for Camper Trailer to Improve Tailgate Clearance

Question:

I have a lightweight RV trailer 3500 #s. It currently has a regular jack on the tongue and 4 stabilizer scissor jacks. Can I replace the scissor jacks with a really heavy duty jack like Ram Scissor Stabilizer Jack - 18-3/4inch Travel - 2,500 lbs and remove the main tongue jack. I could use the 2 front scissor jacks to lift the tongue for hitching and unhitching etc. The regular tongue jack doesnt let me open my tailgate. I want to remove the tongue jack. I dont have a welder to weld another style jack on my frame.

I understand your tailgate clearance need but I do not recommend going without a tongue jack on your camper trailer.

What you might do instead, to both improve your tailgate clearance and retain the safety and utility of a trailer tongue jack, is install a different type of jack, a side-fame-mount type, in place of the A-frame tongue jack. The stabilizer jacks on your camper are designed to support weight but would not take kindly to the bumps they might receive as you back your tow vehicle up to the trailer to hitch it.

Side-frame-mount jacks that can bolt on to your frame are shown on the linked page. These vary in weight capacity but most are in the 1500-1600-lb range. We have both wheel and foot-plate types, such as Fulton F2 # F1413140334 and # MJSQ-2500B.

Unlike A-frame jacks that mount in one specific location a side-frame-mount jack gives you flexibility in deciding exactly where to install it on the trailer's frame.
