Brake Controller Recommendation for a 2008 Chevy 1500 4x4 5.3L Z71Reg Cab Short Bed with 4:10 gears
Question:
Have a 2008 Chevy 1500 4x4 5.3L Z71reg cab short bed with 4:10 gears. I will be pulling a double axle hydraulic dump trailer with a load of about 10-12K. What would you recommend for an electric brake controller/system? Thanks.

I would recommend the Tekonsha P3 Brake Controller, item # 90195, for your application. This brake controller has several functions that will help when pulling a dump trailer.
You will be able to set up the controller for towing the trailer unloaded, and then when additional loads are applied you will be able to use the boost settings to start the braking at a higher setting so the controller will instantly apply additional power and brake smoothly. There are 3 boost settings to choose from depending on the percentage of trailer weight to vehicle weight you are towing, see instructions link for further details.
You will also be able to effectively troubleshoot with the P3. This controller has battery, stop lamp and output voltage readings as well as output current readings (amps), that can be used to verify that the brake controller and trailer brakes are functioning properly, see instructions.
We have a installation article detailing brake controller installation on the Chevrolet trucks and a video that should help as well, see links.
