There are a few factors that you need to take into consideration when looking at weight capacities for your 2016 Jeep Compass. You will want to compare the Gross Trailer Weight (GTW) and Tongue Weight (TW) capacities with that of your Jeep to see what you can safely tow when it comes to a trailer. The determining factor is whichever of those weight capacities is lowest whether it is your Jeep or the trailer hitch itself.

For your Jeep Compass I recommend using the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Receiver Hitch # 75712. This is a Class III hitch with a 2 inch receiver which will open up more options when it comes to available accessories. The Draw-Tite hitch has a GTW of 3,500 lbs and a TW of 525 lbs.

According to page 433 in the online version of the owner's manual for your 2016 Compass, the Compass with either have a GTW of 1,000 lbs and a TW of 150 lbs, or GTW of 2,000 lbs and a TW of 300 lbs depending on the specs of your Compass. Since your Compass will be the determining factor you will want to check your owner's manual to determine what your weight capacities are.

For a complete towing setup you will also need a ball mount, hitch ball, and trailer light wiring.

For a ball mount and hitch ball you could use the Curt # C45036 which comes with a ball mount with a 2" Drop, a 2" diameter hitch ball, and a hitch pin and clip. You will want to refer to the linked helpful article on ball mounts to determine whether or not this option is correct for your application.

For trailer light wiring I recommend using the Tekonsha T-One # 118539 which will install in-line with the wiring in your tail lights and will draw power from the lead that is run to the battery.
