Question:

what is the difference in the 3500# and the 4400# assy. The shoe compound? How do I know what I have on my trailer, or what I need. I have a 2002, 18foot open car hauler.

There should be a tag or information stamped into the axle. It sounds like you have the D44 axle which is a 4,400 pound Dexter axle. If it was made after May 1, 2009 then Dexter lists brakes # K23-462-463-00 as the correct brakes for the axle.

If the axle was made before May 1, 2009 then the correct brakes are # 23-454-455.
