With that said can the mounting be drilled out that extra 1/16 and not mess up the integrity of the latch?

The mounting holes of the # SL716 are right at 1/4 inch which is 1/16 off from 5/16.

Yes, you could enlarge the mounting holes of the # SL716 1/16 of an inch if you needed to without issue.
