Adding a Trailer Hitch to a Laredo 342RD 5th Wheel Trailer to Carry Kayaks

Question:

I was looking at purchasing a cargo carrying basket and attaching it to my 5th wheel bumper. The bumper currently supports the spare tire. Im looking at carrying 2 Kayaks on them. However, everything Im reading right now suggests my bumper isnt rated to handle much more than the spare. Yet, I see these hitch 2inch receiver bolt mounted not welded pictures showing everything from bicycles to mopeds on these bumpers. Very confused but I also dont want to put anyone in danger.

The limiting factor is the capacity of the bumper. If the bumper cannot support the added weight of a cargo carrier and cargo then it can't be used even if the hitch is rated for enough weight. Not all bumpers are created equal so there are some out there that support more weight than the others.

I would check the trailer literature and/or with the manufacturer to determine the weight capacity of the bumper.

The other option is to use a frame mounted hitch such as Adjustable Width Trailer Hitch Receiver for RVs, 22" to 72" Wide Item # 13703. This is the most versatile option because it fits frames from 22 to 72 inches (outside to outside) and box, C-channel, and I-Beam frames. It can also be bolted or welded on. Welding should be done by a professional welder.
