The Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Trailer Brake Controller # 90885 referenced in your question is indeed a proportional brake controller. This means that it will activate your trailer's brakes at the same time and with the same intensity that you apply to them in your tow vehicle. This is a really great product and one that I always recommend. It also features an easy to read digital display along with continuous diagnostics to alert you to any potential issues. It is very well known for its reliability and ease of installation.
To install the controller in your 2017 GMC Sierra 1500, you will just need the Plug-In Adapter # 3016. One end of the adapter will plug into the controller itself and the other end will connect directly to the built-in harness behind the dash in your truck.
I have included the installation details for this product that you can look through.
