5th Wheel Sliding Hitch Options For A 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 2500
Question:
Hi, I am starting the process of shopping for a fifth wheel trailer hitch for my 6.5 truck bed. Chevrolet Silverado 2016, 2500 series truck short box. I woudl like to understand more about the sliding feature that is needed when making sharp turns. I am interested in the automatic slide adjuster.... Thanks

As you may already know, any truck bed shorter than 8' requires the use of either a sliding 5th wheel hitch or a Sidewinder king pin box. A sliding 5th wheel hitch is needed for making sharp turns as the trailer can strike the cab of the vehicle if the proper clearance is not made. The slider allows the vehicle to make normal turns during low-speed maneuvering by locking in place between the cab and rear axle. The greater space between the cab and trailer allows for greater turning clearance. I have attached our 5th wheel towing help article that will further explain this for you.
In order to gain the clearance needed for making a sharp turn with your 5th wheel trailer, you will need to exit the vehicle and disengage the locking mechanism to slide the 5th wheel hitch away from the cab. Once the turn is complete, you will need to re-exit the vehicle again and move the 5th wheel hitch back into it's normal towing position. If this process does not seem like too tall or troublesome of a task for you, I recommend using the B&W Companion 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch part # BWRVK3400-5W in addition to the Custom Underbed Installation Kit part # BWGNRK1016-5W which will give you both 5th wheel and gooseneck towing capabilities.
However, the less troublesome and most efficient option for your 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 is the Demco Hijacker Autoslide 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch part # DM8550035 as this will not require you to exit and reenter the vehicle while making a sharp turn with your 5th wheel trailer. You will also need the Demco Hijacker Premier Series Above-Bed Base Rails and Custom Installation Kit for 5th Wheel Hitches part # DM8552011-71 to install this hitch.
I have included an installation video on both 5th wheel hitches for you.
