Trailer Hitch and Bike Rack Recommendations for a 2016.5 Mazda CX-5 and 4 Bikes
Question:
Hello, I drive a 2016 and a half Mazda CX5. Mazda said they only install 1-1/4 inch hitches but I am concerned about sturdiness. We plan to carry 2 adult and 1-2 kid bikes. What are your thoughts on hitch size? Thank you!

Expert Reply:
If the 1-1/4 inch hitch from Mazda is a Class II hitch (for 1-1/4 inch hitches there are Class I and Class II hitches) then it is rated to handle 4 bikes on a rack. But even if it is a Class II an aftermarket Class III hitch with a 2 inch receiver will afford you more accessory options and cost less than the factory/dealer hitch.
For your 2016.5 Mazda CX-5 a popular Class III hitch is # 76138. I have linked a video showing an example installation for you.
I would suggest the Thule Camber 4 Bike Rack - 1-1/4" and 2" Hitches - Tilting - Steel, Item # TH9056. Since you will be carrying kid bikes and I can only assume a woman's frame bike those bikes will likely need adapter bars such as # 64005 in order to fit on a hanging style bike rack and/or be carried level.
