Recommended Wiring And Brake Controller For 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe

Question:

Hi, I have a 2017 Santa Fe Sport 2.0T and was about to order the wiring harness for the hitch I bought. I have 2 trailers, one which requires a brake controller, so before I order, I have a question. Do I need both the brake controller AND the wiring harness with its connections, or does the brake controller come with all required connections for signal and brake lights, as well as controlling the trailer brakes?

The trailer wiring you need for your 2017 Santa Fe Sport depend on whether or not you have the factory tow package.

If you have the tow package I recommend the Curt T-Connector Wiring Harness # C56332. The connection points for this harness are beneath the vehicle along the frame rail as you can see in the attached video.

If you do not have a factory tow package you will need to hardwire the trailer harness. For that I recommend part # C59496. This kit comes with a circuit tester to help you identify the wires you need for installing the wire harness.

Since you said you have a trailer with brakes I recommend the P3 Brake Controller # 90195. This is one of our most popular because it is easy to set up and operate.

For the brake controller installation, you will need to install a 7-way trailer wiring harness # ETBC7 since there is no plug-in adapter available for your vehicle. The # ETBC7 plugs into the 4-way and additional wiring will need to be done. Once the # ETBC7 is installed you will have a working 4-way and 7-way trailer connector on your Santa Fe. I have attached a drawing that shows how the wiring is run for the # ETBC7 and a brake controller.

When working with electrical connectors I recommend using dielectric grease like part # 11755. This keeps dirt and moisture out of the electrical connections and helps prevent corrosion.
