Why A Class I Trailer Hitch on a 2011 Toyota Prius Can Only Carry a 2 Bikes on a Bike Rack

Question:

I have a 2011 Prius, so I only have the option of a class 1 hitch, apparently. Shouldnt how many bikes you put on the rack be limited by the weight of the bikes, rather than the number of the bikes? Bikes typically weigh between 15 and 35 lbs, so four light road bikes would weigh about the same as two typical mountain bikes. Also, if the tongue weight is limited to 200 lbs, why is there a two bike limit or even a four bike limit as long as the 200 lbs isnt exceeded? Thanks for your help.

The issue with a Class I trailer hitch is not how much the bikes weigh, entirely, it is the amount of torque produced by having weight further from the hitch. With more weight further from the hitch, even if it is a little weight, it can damage the hitch, the rack, and the vehicle, especially when you add in any up and down movement while traveling.

You may have heard of or even used a cheater or breaker bar when changing a tire. The longer the bar the easier it is to loosen lug nuts. The force is multiplied and in the case of a bike rack you would not want that extra force pushing on your hitch and Prius and potentially cause damage.

I often recommend the Swagman Trailhead 2 Bike Carrier, # S63360, as a good option for a 2 bike, class I compatible bike rack. This rack also can tilt down to allow for greater access to the rear of the vehicle. This rack weighs just under 30 pounds so even if loaded to capacity with 2, 35 pound bikes, the tongue weight would reach 100 pounds and you will be well within the safe zone. I have included a link to the installation details for reference.
