For the 2017 Dodge Journey that has LED-type tail lights we offer a powered 4-pole wiring harness kit, Tekonsha # 118536. This installs with plug-and-play taillight connectors that install at your tail lights and with a single wire for 12V power that needs to be run up to the engine compartment.

Because your car has high-efficiency LED lights, its wiring can be thinner gauge than it would be for standard bulbs, and this means that this OEM wiring cannot handle the additional power drawn by the trailer lights. So, harness makers need to design a powered type harness that has this separate 12V power source to deliver the actual current that operates the trailer's lighting. The signals taken in from the taillights simply serve as switches to tell the harness what to do.

We do have a help article concerning how to most easily run this one 12V power wire from the back of the vehicle up to the engine compartment, where it will connect with the battery positive terminal through the supplied fuse holder.
