Question:

I am setting up my 2011 Honda Odyssey to pull a pop-up camper. I will be installing a hitch and the wiring. What transmission cooler do you recommend? Thank you!

Expert Reply:

For your 2011 Honda Odyssey, the transmission cooler I recommend is the Derale Series 8000 Plate-Fin Transmission Cooler Kit w/Barb Inlets - Class III - Efficient # D13503. This is a plate-fin cooler with furnace-brazed aluminum construction and 3/4 inch wide turbulator plates for more efficient cooling. I recommend Derale thermostat # D13011 with mounting bracket # D25793, and extra hose # D13016 for this installation. The thermostat will allow 90 percent of the fluid to bypass the supplemental cooler until the fluid temperature reaches 180 degrees. So if you live in a cold climate and don't want to wait as long for the vehicle to warm up this thermostat is the way to go.

If you don't already have the hitch and wiring, I recommend the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2" # 75270. This is a bolt-on installation and has an e-coat base with a powder coat finish for rust protection and prevention.

For your wiring, I recommend the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118521 which plugs into your Honda Odyssey's wiring harness located behind the driver's-side interior trim panel in your rear cargo area. Once you've plugged in the T-connector, open your fuse box and locate the fuse positions indicated in the instructions. Then insert the included fuses.

For a ball mount, I recommend the etrailer.com Ball Mount Kit for 2" Hitches - 7,500 lbs # 989900. This will give you two ball mounts, one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and another with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop. You also get a 1-7/8 inch hitch ball and a 2 inch ball along with the pin and clip and carrying/storage bag. I've attached an article to assist with your choice.
