Recommended 4 Bike Rack For 2016 Prius V Wagon With 2 inch Hitch Receiver
Question:
Hi, I got a 2inch hitch for my Prius V the wagon version of the Prius. I want to carry 4 bikes on it. What is better, a platform or hanging rack? It sounds like the platform ones are more convenient, but I am worried the extra tongue weight might be too much for a Prius, even with the 2inch hitch installed class II, rated for 350lbs. So would I be better off with a hanging rack, even if it means adapters for womens and kids bikes? Your advice is very much appreciated.

For your 2016 Prius V Wagon with 2 inch hitch receiver, I recommend the Yakima FullSwing 4 Bike Rack - 2" Hitches - Swinging # Y02465. This rack has a swing away design to allow complete access to your hatch even with bikes loaded. This rack has an integrated hitch lock as well as a cable lock for security. This carrier weighs 56 lbs and has a weight capacity of 160 lbs, so you won't be further limited by the hitch tongue weight but may be limited by the vehicle itself.
I also recommend the Swagman Deluxe Bike Frame Adapter Bar for Women's, Children's, and Alternative Frame Bikes # 64005 to create a top frame rail for bikes with step-thru frames. This fits between the seat post and the handlebars to create level transport and greater ground clearance.
Although a platform rack may be easier to load and unload, it will definitely put more torque on your hitch and becomes really long and difficult to access cargo with bikes loaded. I think this swing away option will be a much better fit for your use.
